Knowledge, Art & Power

How does a personal perspective, an artistic perspective, AND historical perspective determine the social construction of cultural knowledge?

Social construction of cultural knowledge is the fact about perspective/artistic/historical, but it is more likely tend to be their own thoughts and opinion. I think Freire personal perspective from the article, he tried to say that when teacher told him what to do and what to know, he didn’t really enjoy because he felt he had no freedom and he can’t express his feeling. Therefore Freire cultural knowledge would be grasp the concept of education, he could be creative with his thoughts and do what his opinion was about. He sometimes will understand exactly what others expect but he just didn’t feel that he was in the right condition. Thus he tends to be rebellious. But if he tried to study hard, the more knowledge he will get and he could use to expand in the real world. So his perspective was opposite from Rodriquez perspective:

Rodriquez perspective that would build up his cultural knowledge was being an excellent student. Going to school and study hard would lead him to be succeeded. He also wanted his family to understand him that he was not foul around with his high promotion. He still has loved and cared for them. He created his own culture by not being distance from his family and at the same time he wanted himself to be a scholarship boy.  He tried to keep up with his own culture.

It would relate to “Smoke Signal” that was from the artist perspectives. They used Victor, Victor’s dad and Thomas as their example of cultural knowledge. Victor told Thomas to change the way he dressed, while they were on their way to Arizona. Victor constructed of culture that he didn’t mean that he wanted to be a White American at all; he tried to fit himself with the condition that he was in. Unlike Mark Trowbridge’s perspective of his artwork was he tried to show us that Native America perspective back during the colonial. They didn’t care what the condition was all they wanted to do was to keep up with their culture and believes. On the piece of artwork called, “fighting for water” was the piece of evidence that how awful of European treated them. They ran for their life, they just wanted to be peaceful with whatever that had. They didn’t want to compete with others, they just want to be independent like they used to before European came.

In the other part of “Smoke Signal” still kept his culture in his heart. The other part of cultural knowledge that these three characters had was to refuse themselves from shorting their hair. They cut it if and only if some one passed away or some bad things happened to them. That is related to Cambodian historic culture, when someone passed away the closest generations would shave or short their hair for the memories or release their pain. They also do this because they want to donate part of their happy life to the passed away people. We believe that they would get this happiness for their next life. Then if we look back to the Indian culture, that was not the only reason that the Indians cut their hair, such as Victor’s father shorted his hair only when he being away from his family and he lost a big part of his life (house was on fire). People that thought of remaining their culture are the people that full of cultural knowledge. When people have their strong believe in something, they also known as a high “status.”

Scott Parker’s theatre exercise on “Status” perspective was to make us understand more about how people being different. He tried to tell us that people have more knowledge; they think of themselves as in a high status and have more power. The opposite of this would be the people that are uneducated or in a lower class most likely thought of themselves as a lower status. They avoid from people; they always want to be alone. In the other hand the ones that want to be by themselves, doesn’t mean that they are in a low status, they just want to be separate from others. They could be smart and intelligent. They have their own way of building their cultural knowledge from the status that they fit in.

In each of personal perspective, artistic perspective and historical perspective believes in their own way. Many of writers or authors always shown their cultural knowledge based on something that are existed or non-existed. They ever tend to give up their belief, but they absorb more ideas. They tried to make their article, novels, art, poems and film be interested for us as a reader. So we all take their different perspectives to compare and contrast which one of those should we follow.
