Glossary of terms in the OAM world

Banner - The Enterprise Resource Planning system that controls most administrative functions at PSU, including student information, financial transactions, HR and inventory control.

Banweb - See PSU Information System...

E-mail Account - E-mail account offered by PSU to most computer account holders. Mail received at ODIN_ID@pdx.edu although OAM will also allow users to specify a firstname.lastname@pdx.edu e-mail address (which will be the preferred method). Users may chose to use this e-mail account, or register a forwarding e-mail address via OAM.

myPSU - The Portland State University portal.

Odin - The naming of various computers and services at PSU has traditionally followed norse mythology, as a tip of the hat to the PSU Vikings. Odin, a Norse god, was a name originally given to a login server in the eighties. Over time, the increasingly consolidated computer account given to users was called the Odin account.

Odin Account - A combination of Odin ID and password that enables you to use various online resources at PSU.

Odin ID - The login name or user ID that you use to log into various computer services at PSU.

Password Aging - The process of requiring a new password to be set for all computer accounts after a defined period of time. Using OAM will indirectly require password resets after 180 days. This is because your Banweb (PSU Information System) account will expire its password periodically and when it expires, Banweb will direct youto OAM to change it. Changing your password in OAM effectively changes it everywhere, thereby accomplishing the goal of password aging. (A more comprehensive password expiry mechanism will be added to OAM at a later date.)

PSU Computer Lab Account - A user ID and password that enables you to log into systems in general use computer labs on campus (both PC and Mac). It can also be used to connect to file shares from some servers. This is sometimes called your Active Directory account.

PSU ID Number - A unique number that identifies you at PSU. This is typically a 9-digit number.

PSU Information System - The web-based interface to a small portion of the Banner System which enables students to register for classes, pay their bills, look at transcripts and perform other administrative functions. PSU employees also have access to the PSU Information System for various tasks.

Sponsored Account - A computer account that is not represented by a person listed in Banner. These are often guest users sponsored by a PSU employee or administrative accounts created for departments. Sponsored accounts may have PSU Computer Lab and E-mail/wifi access. They usually do not have banweb access.

Wifi - Referred to locally as Pubnet, PSU provides wireless network access throughout much of the campus. You will need a valid Odin Account to access this network.
