Nicaraguan Transportation: Buses

US School Buses

The overwhemling majority of buses in Nicaragua are decomissioned school buses from the United States. Many still have their old school district names (Marion County Schools in Salem, Oregon is the closest I saw to home). In cities, routes are occasionally asigned numbers that are usually painted on the window. Rural routes simply display their destination.

Bus Stops

The majority of the lines I saw were flag-and-ride (especially along highways) or featured informal bus stops. Here are some rare exceptions in central Matagalpa.

Tour

My only bus experience was a trip from Sébaco to Matagalpa. It was about as hectic as the photos indicate. Nicaraguans minimize dwell time by never coming to a complete stop as well as boarding at the rear when necessary. The bus is often too crowded for the driver to see to the back. Instead a "doorman" manages the backdoor and lets out a distinctive whiste to signal that a passenger in the rear needs to deboard and again to signal the rear doors close. The last photo shows the doorman who spent the majority of the trip standing outside the moving bus.

Miscellaneous

Among my favorite Nicaraguan ubiquities is the vintage Honda bus with Mercedes emblem.
