The I Ching

HOW TO THROW THE I CHING:

There is actually a fair amount of variation and you can use whatever method works best for you. I think this method, used a lot in Taiwan, is even easier than the numerical system.

1. Throw the coins 3 times for each line of the hexagram. You need six lines so you will throw 18 times for a single question.

2. Transpose your throws into single and divided line as follows.

TTH

HHT

TTT (moving or changing line - yang)

HHH (yin)

3. If you have moving or changing line(s), calculate their position by counting from the bottom up. Then consult the appropriate passage(s) in addition to the Text and the Image. The presence of a moving or changing line indicates greater flexibility and options.

4. If you want greater insights or to see further into the future (interpretations vary) reverse all yin and yang lines to create a new hexagram and look that up:

TTT becomes

HHH becomes

Do not use any of the changing lines text in this second reading; just ignore that.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR FIRST ORAL PRESENTATION:

1. Say what your question was and why it is of importance to you. Add as much personal detail as is necessary for the audience to understand the importance, but no more.

2. Say what hexagram you got and what it means.

a. read at least one sentence that sums up what you think is most important.

b. if you can read characters and want to add some commentary on that, feel free but this is not required.

3. Say what your interpretation is and why you reached that conclusion.

HELPFUL HINTS:

1. Try not to read your talk. Practice making eye contact with your audience.

2. Make sure your talk is no more than 2 minutes long. Practice it to make sure.

3. Make sure your question is one you feel comfortable talking about in public!
