Diversity of the Human Experience Reflection
One of the four goals of Freshman Inquiry is the Diversity of the Human Experience. I think the goal of this is to make us aware that there are many different cultures of people with vastly different views than us, and it may just be the person sitting next to us. This is not a bad thing, but a chance to learn from them and for them to learn from us. We have the unique opportunity to see how many different peoples live and what their values are while we are here at college, and the goal of Diversity is to make sure we are open to those experiences and ready to learn from them in a positive and educational manner.
One of the ways we have been learning to be open to these experiences is through reading about people who lived in foreign countries and foreign cultures. The main book we read in this area is Persepolis. This graphic novel is the story of a girl who grew up in Iran during the cultural revolution there. It is an insightful and interesting book and I encourage everyone to pick it up.
I chose the critical essay we wrote on Persepolis as my example for Diversity, because I feel it shows how I am learning to see other cultures in a way that is not scary, but enlightening. The essay is one of my best works, and it truly embodies what the Diversity of the Human Experience goal means to me.
