Barron-Craven Pledges to Run Ethical Campaign, Officially asks Opponent to do the Same Portland, OR, February 22, 2005 – Amanda Barron and Lindsey Craven, presidential and vice presidential candidates, for Portland State University’s student body elections released a Campaign Code of Ethics today on their website www.votepsu.com. All members of their slate have signed this code of ethics with the understanding that they will be disassociated from the campaign if they are caught in violation of it. This comes partially in response to the last year’s election, which was cancelled, where dirty campaigning ran rampant. ”Last year was ridiculous,” says Lindsey Craven, “People lost respect for each other, damaged each other’s materials, and spoiled relationships.” Amanda Barron explains, “It’s common sense; whoever wins will be the leader of the organization. I do not want to see any personal contempt among candidates because I believe that we will need to work together in the coming year. I am confident that we will win because of our issues and our abilities to achieve our goals.” Amanda and Lindsey met with their opponents tonight to discuss their campaign ethics and asked Erin Devaney and Molly Woon to sign a similar code of ethics. Erin and Molly said that they would speak to their slate members and get back to the Barron – Craven team. Amanda and Lindsey are awaiting their response. ### Barron-Craven Enters Campaign Proposing Real Solutions to Real Student Issues Portland, OR, February 13, 2005 – Amanda Barron and Lindsey Craven are leading a powerful slate into the 2005 ASPSU election. Their primary issues include: PSU affordability, student access to resources and information, student control on PSU’s decision-making committees, and protecting student rights and privacy, all of which have been under attack in the past few years. Amanda and Lindsey believe that it is important to address the real issues that effect all PSU students every day. These issues, along with proper representation of the student body, will make for a very successful year at PSU if elected. “Most decisions affecting students are made on the administrative level at PSU. We will do whatever it takes to make sure that students have a strong impact in the decision-making process, even if we have to force our way in,” explains Amanda Barron. “We have one year in office and we have to work efficiently,” says Lindsey Craven, “We understand that students face Real Issues and we have realistic plans for addressing them during our term.” While the costs of attending PSU are drastically increasing, student services are continuously decreasing. “First and foremost, we must address the issue of affordability. The best way to improve PSU for all students is to make it an affordable institution,” says Amanda and Lindsey as they discuss their plans to address a number of student affordability issues. They state, “We will fight to make higher education more affordable by lobbying for a state-wide cap on tuition increases, increased funding for the childcare block grant, and stable funding for the Oregon Opportunity Grant.” They discuss plans to advocate for lower textbook prices and cheaper bus passes for PSU students. They also have concrete plans for improving student health services and developing full-time, on-site childcare for student parents. Amanda and Lindsey explain that they will demand student representation on all decision-making bodies of the institution; ensuring student voices have are not only heard, but have real impact on all-university decisions. They believe legitimate decisions cannot be made without student input. “The blatant disregard for student voice in the administration’s decision to contract with HigherOne without asking students also brought with it an urgency to address student privacy rights. We will fight for passage of stronger privacy protection laws in the state legislature to ensure that student rights to privacy will not be compromised by their status as a student,” explains Amanda Barron. “These are the Real Issues. We propose Real Solutions.” Through their extensive experience with all-university committees, leadership positions at PSU, and involvement with various student groups Amanda Barron and Lindsey Craven have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively lead the student body.
