BIOGRAPHY
I grew up in Central Point, Oregon (near California) and moved to Portland about eight years ago. My father was Cherokee and moved back to the Eastern Band of Cherokees when I was eighteen. Visiting him there, I was fortunate to get the opportunity to experience that aspect of my heritage and culture. I also got my second tattoo in the hills of Tennessee by a big scary guy that I’m pretty sure had sadistic tendencies – I wouldn’t recommend it.
I received my B.A. in English Literature from Portland State University in June 2005. As an undergraduate at PSU, my fondest memories are with my sisters in Phi Sigma Sigma – yes, there is Greek life at PSU and no, we aren’t Animal House extras or future Stepford Wives.
One week after graduation, I started PSU’s MS program in Publishing. I wanted to stay in a writing field, but decided I’d rather keep my own writing as a hobby rather than turn it into a job. Besides, I’ve been a starving college student long enough and I’d rather not transgress into a starving writer as well.
I decided to become a mentor to try and figure out if teaching appeals to me. I went through the entire University Studies sequence from Freshman Inquiry to Senior Capstone and had many great experiences. I’m also a strong supporter of University Studies because otherwise, general requirements may well include math, which is a four letter word. At PSU, I’ve come to love service through learning as well as cooperative group work and believe it’s a much better precursor to any career than general requirement courses.
