Teaching Approach

My teaching philosophy centers on a highly interactive, experiential, and discovery-based approach to learning. While I believe that a well-crafted and engaging lecture has its place, I try to draw on a wide variety of more participatory teaching techniques in order to keep learning fresh, accommodate different learning styles, and ensure that students are active participants in helping to create and take ownership of their own learning environment.

Teaching Experience

Currently I teach for the University Studies and Systems Science programs at Portland State University. Courses taught include Freshman Inquiry (Theme: Sustainability); Natural Science Inquiry; Freedom, Privacy, and Technology; Game Theory; Models in the Natural and Social Sciences; Artificial Life; many Software Engineering courses, and Web Design with Databases. I have taught a wide variety of science and technology subjects in diverse venues to students ranging from elementary to graduate school level. In 2006 and 2007 I taught in the Integrated Sciences Program and Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. I was also the science teacher for the PSU Upward Bound program for 3 years.
