Lab 2: Geodatabase Topology

Introduction

This lab teaches you how to define geodatabase topology rules and use them to clean up your data.

Instructions

Do exercise # 7 (pages 90-121) in Chapter 3 of ArcGIS 9 Geodatabase Workbook (GeodatabaseWorkbook.pdf). The pdf file can be found in the I:\Students\Data\GIS\ArcGIS Documentation\ArcGIS9.1_documentation\ESRI_Library\Managing_data_with_ArcGIS folder. You can download the tutorial file (lab2.zip) here. You will need to unzip it. After you added the topology toolbar described on page 96, you need to click on the editor toolbar and select “start editing” to enable topology toolbar.

Answer the following questions and produce a map showing the final topology errors, lotlines, and lots of the dataset you’ve edited.  Hand them in to the TA.  Labs should be typed, include your name and lab number, be well organized, and be stapled together.

1. What is a feature dataset in a geodatabase?
2. What is cluster tolerance? Describe how class ranks work when applying cluster tolerance in a topology.
3. Describe the types of error identified by the three topology rules you defined in the exercise.
