Lab 5: Enhancing imagery

Introduction

In this lab you will learn how enhance satellite imagery using spatial, spectral, and radiometric techniques.

Instructions

Read pages 129-164 of the Erdas Field Guide.  Open the lab book and skim Chapter 11. You can download the tutorial file (lab5.zip) here. You will need to unzip it. Complete the tutorial exercise and produce map compositions for the following images - convolve, crisp, reverse, inverse, tassled, and mineral. Put your name on each with a text box and print it.  Answer the following questions.

  1. What is "snapping to raster" when subsetting an image?
  2. Click on the AOI tool within the subset dialogue and explain the three different options and the different results you get using each.
  3. Write a paragraph describing the concept of convolution to the lay person.
  4. Draw a table with the 3x3 edge detect filter values.
  5. Explain the tassled image including what several features look like in the image and how you might use this result.
