Picnic in Grant Park on July 22nd

If you are coming to the picnic please try to print out a few fliers for the listeners and the station. (PDF) ..... (Open Office)

When: 11:30am - 3:30pm

Where: Grant Park NE 33rd Ave & US Grant Pl, Portland, OR

Why:

It will be a sunny day. Why not enjoy a nice peaceful picnic in one of your public parks, which is next to a public pool and has a large water fountain to play in, with friends to talk about issues that are important to you. BBQ food will be going and lots of socializing, activities like tall bike jousting are in the works. Plus the Alberta Street Clowns said the will be at the bicycle picnic.

Most importantly this is a time for us to engage in conversation about how we as individuals can make bicycling in our current society safer. There are many areas in which need attention. One is our own actions as users of public roads. We as bicycling citizens need to set the example by following the rules and educating other riders. Another reason is to talk about how to engage non-bicycling citizens and build an understanding that roads are public resources.

Is this picnic a protest? No. It is a FUN summer picnic in a park for us to show that we are intelligent, insightful ... but most of all ... just like everyone else, we like to have fun on a nice summer afternoon without fear of malice directed toward us as we legally bicycle on public roads, listen to public airwaves and picnic in public parks.

What to bring:

Food - be prepared to share

Water - bring a lot is is gonna be hot

Sheet or Blanket - to sit on

Sunscreen

Towel - did I mention pool and water fountain

Friends

Bicycles - all kinds

Fun Summer Picnic Toys & Games (like bubbles, frizbees, holla hoops and Lawn Jarts)

Grill and charcoal if you can - I am bringing my grill

What to expect:

It is a picnic where people can hop from group to group sharing food and thoughts.

Oh-yea, if you want to express some thoughts in person with a certain radio show / station they have been instructed to be non-confrontational.

I was thinking of a game where small groups of about 4 go and talk to a radio show / station person for about 5 ? 10 minuets ... then the group will come back and tag another group to go talk to the same radio station person. This will keep a constant message but different faces communicating with the station. There are also fliers that we can give staff so that at the end of the day they will see how many people have talked to them about this issue.

After the picnic a group of us are going to check out the Division/Clinton Street Fair ... Ok, Ok ... I am going to have fliers to pass out there as well.

If you have any ideas please share them with me: bike_picnic [at] pnxcorp.com
