Description:
This is a course in applied statistics with an emphasis on interpreting and using data from mechanical engineering and materials science. The elements of probability are presented as necessary for applications. Statistical tools including graphical methods, regression, and experimental design will be treated in connection with data and applications.
Prerequisites:
MTH 252
Course Objectives:
To provide a working understanding of modeling data in engineering, to provide some foundations in probability for methodology, and to prepare the student for the course ME 488 Design of Experiments.
Student Learning Outcomes:
The student will learn foundations of probability for understanding stochastic phenomena, methods of estimation and regression for modeling data, and notions of experimental design for gathering and interpreting data.

Grading:
Midterm 25%, Final 40%, HW 20%, Computer Project 15%. Homework is due at the end of class Fridays, no late homework.
Computing:
We will be using the statistics computing platform R.
