ATTENDANCE: Attendance
is very important. If you do not come to class, it will affect your grade.
Get the telephone number of a classmate who can help you with homework
if you are absent.
GRADES:
* Attendance can affect your final
grade. Be sure you understand how.
* I give grades
in letters and percentages. Below seventy percent is not passing.
* I will not take late homework.
If you are absent, bring your homework with you when you
return to class.
* I will not give make-up tests
or quizzes. If you are absent, you will get a zero.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Use the dictionary to find a word, the part of speech, and syllable
stress.
- Find and restate the main idea of a paragraph or passage.
- Answer comprehension questions about details in a passage.
- Use examples from passages to explain and support points.
- Write original sentences using vocabulary studied in class.
- Summarize main points from a passage in a simple paragraph.
- Identify common prefixes,
suffixes, and roots, and understand their meanings.
- Identify basic noun, verb, adjective, and adverb forms that have
been introduced and practiced.
- Guess the meanings of words when their meanings are given in a paragraph.
- Read at a rate of 80-120 words per minute.
- Be able to discuss readings in a group.
