Homework must be handed in on the day it is due. Late homework will only
be accepted if you are absent, and hand it in on the same day that you
return to class. Late homework will be marked, but will receive a grade
of zero.

In this course, we will quickly review various skills and content covered
in Level E: prefixes, suffixes, and word roots; guessing vocabulary from
context; skimming to identify main ideas of paragraphs and passages; scanning
to locate specific information; identifying supporting details; reading
under timed conditions; analyzing word forms; and practice using a dictionary
to locate and pronounce words.
We will also practice: 1) paraphrasing to summarize the main points
of a passage, 2) inferring ideas from a passage, and 3) using a dictionary
to choose the correct meaning of a word. In addition, we will learn
more prefixes, suffixes (word forms), and word roots, and learn to identify
the plot, characters, setting, mood, theme, style, and purpose in short
stories.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the term, you should be able to do the following.

Use a dictionary to locate words, choose the correct meaning, and figure
out their pronunciation and appropriate part of speech.

Determine the meaning of words from context using punctuation and format
as clues

Skim for main ideas and scan for details in a passage

Summarize main points of a passage in a coherent paragraph

Distinguish main ideas from details and examples
-
Identify word forms (noun, verb, adjective, adverb)

Know the meainings of prefixes, suffixes, and roots introduced in class

Make basic inferences about information in a passage
-
Identify character, setting, and plot in works of fiction.
