LEVEL 2 GRAMMAR:
GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES

Every week we will have a quiz on verbs that require gerunds or infinitives.  You need to be able to write sentences using each of the verbs below.  Quizzes after the first may include some verbs from previous quizzes, so don't forget what you learned!  Also, you will see these on the final exam.  Almost all of the verbs below are taken from Focus on Grammar:  Intermediate (second edition), Appendices 9 - 12 (p. A5).

The following key will help you.  For infinitives that take an object, these rules apply in active voice only.  Note that passive voice changes the infinitives:

We allowed him to go. (active)    He was allowed to go. (passive)
*These verbs change meaning, depending on what comes after them (G or I).

G =  verbs requiring a gerund I = verbs requiring an infinitive IO = verbs requiring an object and infinitive G, I = verbs taking either a gerund or infinitive

PAST PARTICIPLES and PAST TENSE

Every week we will have a quiz on past tenses and past participles of some irregularverbs. These verbs are listed in the back of your book (Focus on Grammar:  Intermediate (second edition), Appendix 1 (pp. A1-A2). You will need to be able to write both the simple past AND the past participle of each verb.  Also, spelling is important, so study hard!
