It's OK to narrate the past in the present tense - we do it in English, too. Start by setting the scene in the past: "Ich war in der Oper." Then continue in present tense, adding emotion: "Dann höre ich, der Tenor singt falsch…"

(Suggestion for advanceds: Du mußt das so singen = You gotta sing it this way / Ich würde das so singen = I'd sing it this way… / Man kann das auch so singen = One can sing it this way too…)
