Ape Cave

July 11, 2002

The Ape Cave is an old lava tunnel that drained many years ago. It is very damp and even has a breaze that runs through it. I don't know where the breaze comes from or where it goes, however, it is caused by the heating and cooling of the surrounding area. During the day the air flows one direction through the cave and at night it flows the other.

part of the cave is very accessible and you can walk very easily through it. The other part of the cave is more difficult and at parts you would need to crawl through on your belly.

What a wonderful day for an outing. It was our first date since summer vacation started. We were so excited that we started preparing for the trip the night before. We packed delicious ham sandwiches with cheese, tomatos, mushrooms, sprouts, and onions. We also had some fruits and snacks.

We drove along the river and we saw many lakes. There were a couple of nice spots for taking pictures of Mt. St. Helens. We also saw a piece of land that we eventually would like to purchase and on which we would like to build a house (in our dreams...).

The cave was nothing like we had imagined. It was deeper than we thought, colder than we thought, and so much darker than we thought................. Emika

Now,let's go into the cave!!

We needed to have a lantern. Without that, we saw nothing. As we entered, we felt the cold air coming out, it surrounded our legs...

Inside the cave looks like this. As you can see, there is a rocky wall and the wet floor. We walked for 5 minutes until we saw the cave was ending....but......it kept on going...........10 minutes......is that the end?.......No........15 minutes.......is it ever going to end?..............20 minutes.................

Finally...........

Here is the end. We turned off the lantern and experienced how quiet it is in the cave.....I was glad that I was not the only one there.
