The Impossible

Noin paused a moment to glance at the reflection in her bedroom mirror. She looked herself to most, but someone who truly knew her would realize that something was missing.

She knew what it was. With Zechs missing, presumed dead, she felt empty. And she did not want to go to the party tonight. Which was why she was dressed as she was.

Her Preventer uniform was clean and neat and serviceable, but it was not something one would wear to a club. Her plan was to go, be seen enough that people would say she'd been there then plead work and go home. Of course, this would only work if Sally didn't see her. Her old partner knew that Noin's work was done, and she had a free evening.

My dad chased monster from the dark

Checked underneath my bed

He could lift me with one arm over top his head

He could loosen rusty bolts with a quick turn of his wrench

In thirteen years I've never seen him cry

But the day that Grandpa died I realized

Trapped, she was trapped. She should have never come; she should have stayed home at to hell with what anyone said. But no, she had come, and now Noin was stuck at a table full of men who were not being at all subtle with their interest in her.

"Lucrezia, I hear you need a new partner," Brian said.

"Yes, who will you pick?" asked Alex.

"I won't be choosing a new partner," Noin replied. "Zechs is still my partner."

She tried not to wince at the use of her despised first name. Kyle, who had only just recently become a Preventer spoke up; he had never met Zechs.

"You have to face facts honey. He's gone, dead most likely. It's time to move on."

Noin felt like he had slapped her, but she remained composed, "The rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated in the past.

Could happen just like that

Unbendable steel bends

If the fury of the wind is unstoppable

I've learned to never underestimate the impossible

Zechs sighed as he left Lady Une's office. It had been one hell of a mission, and he was exhausted. But there was something he had to do first.

"Do you know where Noin is?"

"She's probably at the party at MacMurphy's tonight. You're going to see her?"

"Yes, after a shower and changing into a clean uniform.

"Good. She's been really worried about you."

Then there was my junior year

Billy had a brand new car

It was late

The road was wet

I guess the curve was just too sharp

I walked away without a scratch

They brought the helicopter in

Billy couldn't feel his legs

They said he'd never walk again

But Billy said he would and his mom and daddy prayed

And the day we graduated he stood up and said

There was quite a crowd. Zechs slipped in the door and began to search for Noin. He finally found her seated with a group of young men. She was turned, so she couldn't see him. Handsome young men. Zechs sighed; Noin was okay. He should just go.

Leaving, he turned back to take one last glace at his best friend and only love.

Noin sighed. In a minute she was going to kill one of these guys. They might mean well, but they were driving her crazy. She half turned, trying to come up with an excuse to leave, and looked up. Her violet eyes caught a pair of sky blue eyes.

So don't tell me that it's over

Don't give up on you and me

Cause there's no such thing as hopeless if you believe

Her eyes lit up.

"Zechs!"

She was out of her seat in an instant and halfway across the romm. Her table of admirers were shell shocked.

Zechs wrapped his arms around her; he never wanted to let her go. Her smile grew.

"Let's go home; we have some catching up to do."
