Roll to Me

Zechs sighed as he surveyed his desk. It was piled with paperwork, and he had left even more at the office. Why had he agreed to take this government position? He wasn't suited for it at all.

But he had accepted the position that society said was best for him, and now he was stuck with it. Stuck with stifling suits, with people calling him Milliardo when he preferred Zechs. Stuck at parties with people whose main concern was their social status. Stuck with a residence that was both too big and too opulent for him. Stuck with his "assistant" Dorothy Catelonia whom everyone was pushing at him, and who wouldn't take a hint that he wasn't interested.

Look around the world pretty baby

Is it everything you hoped it would be

The wrong guy

The wrong situation

The right time to roll to me

He looked out the window. It was beautiful out. Sunny and hot out with enough of a breeze to be comfortable. The paperwork could wait.

The suit was the first thing to go. He changed into a pair of comfortable khaki pants and a button up t-shirt. He also pulled his hair back into a ponytail.

He picked up a book he'd been intending to read for months and fixed himself a glass of ice tea. Settling on the front porch, Zechs kicked back and began to relax.

He admired a car driving down the street. It was a dark metallic blue mustang convertible. As it neared, he recognized the driver. Her short raven hair was windswept, and her violet eyes sparkled with mischief.

Look into your heart pretty baby

Is it aching with some nameless need

Is there something wrong and you can't put your finger on it

Right then roll to me

Noin pulled up in front of his house.

"Hey Zechs."

"Noin, I haven't seen you in ages. You look wonderful."

And she did. She was dressed simply in blue jeans and a white peasant blouse. Her feet were bare, and Zechs was sure he'd find a pair of sandals in the backseat.

"Thanks. You look miserable."

Trust her to be honest.

"I'm not suited for my job at all. I have no clue why I took it in the first place."

"It's because I wasn't there to talk some sense into you."

He laughed, "You're probably right."

She smiled tentatively at him, "Zechs, I have a question for you."

And I don't think I have ever seen a soul so in despair

So if you want to talk the night through

Guess who will be there

"Shoot."

"Well, since Wufei joined the Preventers, I've needed a new partner. I was hoping you'd be interested."

She looked down. Zechs noted her hands were trembling. He gently lifted her chin.

"I'd love to be your partner Noin."

Her smile was blinding.

"I don't suppose the offer of sharing your apartment still stands?"

"When can you move in?"

"Give me an hour, and I'm out of here."

"Really?" she was delighted.

"You bet. I never unpacked most of my stuff."

"Great."

So don't try to deny it pretty baby

You've been down so long you can hardly see

When the engine's stalled and it won't stop raining

It's the right time to roll to me

An hour and a half later they had finished loading the mustang with his stuff.

"Ready to go?"

"More than ready; let's go."

Dorothy chose that moment to pull up.

"Milliardo, I brought that paperwork for you. I thought we could work on it together." She noticed Noin whose hand was entwined with Zechs', "What are you doing here?"

"Helping Zechs move out."

"What?"

Zechs grinned, "The paperwork is all yours Dorothy."

"What?"

"I think he means take this job and shove it," Noin replied.

Dorothy's eyes bugged out. She sputtered for a minute then drove off.

Noin fished a locket from under her shirt. Zechs knew it well; it had been his mother's, and he had given it to her before the war had began.

"When you gave me this, you told me to keep it until you could stay with me forever. Well, I think that forever is about to begin."

He smiled, "I think you're right."

She reached up ans pulled him down into a gentle kiss then pulled him toward the car, "Come on, let's hit the road."
