Noel Christmas Eve

Noin shook her head. She had to be crazy. She crept through her own living room stopping a moment to glance at the soft light from the Christmas tree. A tree that had presents for two people underneath it. Only half of those presents would be opened tomorrow morning.

For Zechs was gone. He had died during his last mission. And while there had been no sign of his body, it would have taken a miracle for him to survive. That had been two weeks ago.

Now it was Christmas Eve, and one of the presents under the tree was tearing a hole in her heart. It was a small package, a small grey jewelry box with a violet ribbon tied around it. It was obvious what was inside it; it was an engagement ring. She had found the gift by accident while she was searching for her Lake Victoria yearbook. The box had fallen off the shelf and landed at her feet. She had burst into tears upon opening it. There were so many dreams attached to that ring that now would never come true.

She shivered in the cold night air; this was crazy. She stood in the snow wearing only a pair of flannel pajamas and sheepskin slippers. But above her the heavens were bright with stars, and that was why she was out here. Words from an old song came to her mind.

A frosty Christmas Eve when the stars were shining

I traveled forth alone where westward falls the hill

And from many many a village in the darkness of the valley

Distant music reached me peals of bells a ringing

She sighed softly her breath hovering in the air. It was a beautiful night. The air was crisp, and the sky was clear. She took some comfort in the beauty o the night. Some, but still it would be better shared. The chimes from the local college rang one o'clock.

Noin often wondered anymore if she should just give up. But she didn't; there were two reasons not to. Hope was one. It was small, barely a spark, but it was there. The other reason was Relena. The girl had adopted her, and she didn't deserve to lose what little family she had left.

Her face tilted towards the stars, she stood there shivering in the cold. The stars were comforting; they made her feel better.

Then sped my thoughts to olden times to that first of Christmases

When shepherds who were watching heard music in the fields

And they sat there and they marveled for they knew they could not tell

Whether it was angels or the bright stars a singing

Noin wrapped her arms around herself. Not that it stopped her shivers. Alone in the starry night she stood. The night was still, and there was no wind. It was as if she was the only living thing on the planet. It was people, and it was lonely too.

She just stood there in the starlight. She stopped thinking. She stopped feeling. She simply was. It was a peaceful state of being. She didn't know how long she stood there; she didn't care.

She shivered again. A warm coat was draped over her shoulders. Noin pulled it closer grateful for the warmth then froze realizing the implications of its presence. Someone placed their hands on her shoulders. She turned into a man's warm chest and inhaled a familiar scent. Strong arms wrapped around her.

Noin looked up into two sky blue eyes she knew so well. Zechs smiled down at her, and his arms tightened around her. She reached a trembling hand up to touch his face. They stood together trapped in that moment.

But to me heard afar it was starry music

The singing of the angels

The comfort of the Lord

Words of old that come a traveling through the riches of the times

And I softly listened as I stood upon the hill

And I softly listened as I stood upon the hill

Finally Zechs leaned down and captured her lips in a sweet, hungry kiss. They broke apart breathless minutes later. Then Zechs suddenly scooped her up into his arms.

"As beautiful as it is out here love, you're going to freeze to death if we stay out here much longer. Why don't we go inside, build up a fire, and open Christmas presents?"

"But I already have the best present Zechs; you came back to me."

He laughed and headed inside.

"And Zechs, my answer is yes."
