I Knew I Loved You

The residential area of the Mars Terraforming Project was brightly decorated. It was the first anniversary of the project, and everyone was in a festive mood. Vice-Foreign Minister Relena Yui herself had come to help them celebrate. Of course for two of the residents that wasn't anything special.

Zechs and Noin stood half hidden in the shadows as they listened to Relena's speech. It was a special day for them both, but it was especially so for Zechs. There were two reasons for that. The first was his baby sister, who now was a married woman and an important political figure, was here. It was always good to see her. But the second, he would have to wait and see how things fell out.

Maybe it's intuition

Noin squeezed his hand and smiled at him. She knew how much all this meant to him. Both being a part of building a community instead of destroying it and having his little sister with him to celebrate. Zechs smiled back and wrapped an arm around her. She sighed contented. As long as he was here with her, she was happy. Life might be difficult at times, but being with Zechs more than made up for that.

When the speech ended, they slipped off into the milling crowd. Everyone was headed to the banquet. To tell the truth, it wasn't really a banquet, but it was a feast. Tables had been set up ringing an open space that would serve as a dance floor later on. The two of them found seats at a half empty table. A few minutes later Relena and Heero joined them.

They laughed and caught up on things over the meal. Relena filled them in on what had been happening with their friends back on Earth and the colonies including the news that Hildie and Duo were now engaged. Zechs and Noin told them about the going ons of the project staff. Relena had everyone, including Heero, laughing with her telling of how Duo and Wufei ended up covered with maple syrup at a Preventer function.

Two technicians finally got the sound system working, and music filled the air. Relena and Heero were one of the first couples out on the dance floor. As a slow piece began to play, Zechs drew Noin out onto the dance floor.

Noin was content to stay in Zechs' arms even after the song had ended. It was not too often that she got a chance to simply relax with him. There was always something that needed to be done, and they often found themselves working on their days off. Neither of them were strangers to hard work, but everyone needs to relax once in awhile.

After half a dozen dances, they left the floor. Noin collapsed onto a bench in a quiet corner and offered Zechs a smile, "That was fun, but now my feet hurt."

He grinned back, "Think how Relena must feel after all those formal balls she has to go to."

She shuttered, "Thank you, no. I am so glad we don't have to deal with politics."

Zechs slid an arm around her, "I'll agree with you there."

Silence descended, but it was a comfortable silence. Noin rested her head on Zechs' shoulder. This was nice, simply being with him. Zechs was toying with something in his pocket.

"Noin, I have a question for you," he sounded nervous; Zechs was almost never nervous.

"Shoot."

"I've been thinking about us for awhile. A preferably married us." He turned so he could look her in the eye, "Will you marry me Noin?"

Her smile was brilliant, "Yes."

A thousand angels dance around you

I am complete now that I've found you

From his pocket Zechs produced a silver ring that held a heart shaped sapphire and placed it on her hand. Laughing at his sigh of relief, Noin drew him back onto the dance floor, "Come on, we've got a lot to celebrate."
