All Star

"Megan, Fastex is yours. Take care of it for me," with those words Jack Fassler drew his last breath.

Megan Fassler watched her father's body as tears poured down her face. It was a half hour later when she left the hospital. A week after the funeral she finally returned to the Fastex garage.

The place had been trashed. Equipment was broken, supplies scattered all over. The woman sat down amidst the ruin and cried. She didn't see the pickup truck that parked outside, or the man who made his way to her side.

His gentle touch made her aware of his presence. Megan turned into his open arms.

"I can't do this Mark; I can't. Dad was barely keeping the team afloat. How am I supposed to do that? There isn't really a team anymore."

"That's not true; there's me and you at least. I'm not going to leave you Megan."

"Excuse me, Charger?" a man in a business suit interrupted them.

"Yes."

"I represent team Fastrack. Since your contract with Fastex is up, we'd like you to join our team. We can make it worth your while."

Megan tensed. Mark looked the man in the eye and said, "I'm sorry; I'll be staying with Fastex."

"But…"

"No, thank you. Goodbye."

Megan watched incredulously as the man walked away. Fresh tears sprang to her eyes.

"Why?"

"Because this is where I belong. Here with you and Fastex."

"Mark, it's not much of a team. Two racers, no mechanics, and a trashed garage. You'd make more money with another team."

"Three racers," Steve's voice said.

"Five if you'll have us," added Eve.

Megan looked up to see Steve, Carlos, and Eve in the doorway; Eve and Carlos were holding hands.

"Hey, don't forget about me! I can help in the pits," Miles put his two cents in.

"Don't worry, I won't let him blow up anything," Duck said.

Tears of gratitude trickled down Megan's face, "You guys are the best."

They surveyed the garage; it was a mess. Gloria, Steve's girlfriend, appeared at the door, "Hey Megan, there's some people here to see you."

There were two people with her, a green eyed guy with unruly dark hair and an Asian looking woman. The man extended his hand to Megan.

"I'm Tannim, and this is Shar. We're with Fairgrove Industries."

"The racing firm?" she asked.

"Yes. We're wondering if you'd be interested in working with Fairgrove."

"What?"

"I know team Fastex isn't in top condition right now, but we wanted to offer your team the contract first."

"But why?"

"We've had our eye on several teams, and yours seems the best match," Shar said. "Do you remember Serena Tsukino?"

Megan nodded thinking of the young blond driver who went by the name of Moonstar.

"She probably mentioned that racing runs in her family," Tannim continued. "Her uncle is the head of Fairgrove. She was here to check out the teams in the area for us."

"Guys?" Megan turned to her teammates.

"Sounds good to me," Steve said.

"We're in," Carlos spoke for both Eve and himself.

Mark just grinned at her; Megan turned back to Tannim and Shar, "You've got a deal."

"Great."

Serena popped her head into the garage, "Hey Megan, want some help cleaning up this dump?"

"Sure."

"Come on guys."

Serena had brought at least thirty people with her who set to work on the garage. A raven haired woman with mischievous violet eyes took pity on the bewildered Megan.

"Most of us have adopted Serena as family. Any time she gets involved with something, you tend to get al least some of the rest of us."

"Are there any more of you coming?"

"Just the O'Malley clan. They'll be by with pizza later.

Once the actual clean up was done, it became an impromptu party. Megan was really beginning to enjoy herself when Redline showed up. A hush fell over the room as he mad his way over to Megan.

"So, you're going to keep the team, eh? Your father could barely manage to keep it afloat, and he was a man. You're just a girl; you'll never manage."

Serena's voice broke the silence that followed.

"Oh really?"

she hoisted herself up onto a crate next to a girl her age who had honey colored hair and sparkling blue-green eyes; they looked like sisters, twins even. There was a wicked grin on her face, "I find that hard to believe."

She opened her mouth and sang.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me

I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed

She was lookin' kind of dumb

With her finger and her thumb in the shape of an L on her forehead

An identical grin appeared on the other girl's face, but she did nothing yet.

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming

Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running

A soft alto voice joined Serena's sweet soprano.

Didn't make sense not to live for fun

Brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do

So much to see

So what's wrong with taking the back street

The two girls were looking straight at Redline.

You'll never know if you don't go

You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now you're an all star

Get your game on

Go play

Hey now you're a rock star

Get the show

Get paid

All that glitters is gold

Only shooting star break the mold

Mina, one of Serena's friends that Megan actually knew, started the next verse.

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder

You're bundled up now wait until you get older

But the meteor men beg to differ

Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin

The water's getting warm so you might as well swim

My world's on fire

What about yours

That's the way I like it and I never get bored

Quite a few more people joined in on the chorus. Megan noticed Redline was looking slightly uncomfortable.

Hey now you're an all star

Get your game on

Go play

Hey now you're a rock star

Get the show

Get paid

All that glitters is gold

Only shooting star break the mold

They were singing in harmony. It was amazing to hear. Megan noticed that almost everyone was singing, humming, or tapping their feet. Redline looked like he was somewhere between being outraged and embarrassed. As they started singing the chorus again, Megan found herself singing along.

Hey now you're an all star

Get your game on

Go play

Hey now you're a rock star

Get the show

Get paid

All that glitters is gold

Only shooting star break the mold

Serena laughed as her boyfriend, Darien, lifted her down from her perch. She launched into the third verse with vengeance.

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas

I need to get myself away from this place

I said yep

What a concept

I could use a little fuel myself

And we could all use a little change

She made a little gesture that seemed to say all together now.

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming

Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running

Didn't make sense not to live for fun

Brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do

So much to see

So what's wrong with taking the back street

Megan felt Mark wrap his arms around her waist. Serena shot her a grin.

You'll never know if you don't go

You'll never shine if you don't glow

Just about everyone was singing the final chorus. In harmony. It was amazing, and suddenly Megan knew that she could do this; she would manage with a little help from her friends.

Hey now you're an all star

Get your game on

Go play

Hey now you're a rock star

Get the show

Get paid

All that glitters is gold

Only shooting star break the mold

As the last note died away, Serena said, "We have here lady doctors, lawyers, police officers, FBI agents, forensic pathologists, therapists, diplomats, politicians, Marines, students, artists, singers, and racecar drivers. And you know what, they all do a damn fine job at what they do. We happen to be talented individuals, and if you're too short sighted to see past our gender, that's your problem."

Redline stepped toward Serena menacingly.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," said a tall blond man who was leaning against the wall. "All of us here consider Serena our little sister, niece, cousin, friend, or something of the sort. And a lot of us aren't as gentle as she is."

Redline looked around; there was no way he was going to win this one. He turned and walked away leaving the celebration behind. Megan looked around at the people celebrating around her. They all believed in her. And now she believed in herself. Mark drew her out into the garage turned dance floor.

"Come on," he said, "let's celebrate. You did it."

"You mean we'll do it," she corrected; she laughed. Anything was possible for a group of all stars.
