APA Style Guide

  Some things to consider…

1.                  You should always include a title page with your name, the date, and the institution you are associated with. This should be in 12-point font, just like your paper, and should be centered on the page. There are guidelines in the APA manual (found in the library) on how long titles should be.

2.                  Pages should be numbered in the upper right hand corner with no number on the first page (which is the title page).

Citing articles in your text:

1.                  Do not cite the title of an article in the text of your paper. The only place you should cite the title of an article is in the Reference section.

2.                  When referring to an article within the text of your paper, simply refer to the author(s) last names and the year the article was published.

Example 1: Affective commitment is defined as an emotional attachment to the organization (Meyer, Paunonen, Gellatly, Goffin, & Jackson, 1989).

Example 2: Greenhaus and Beutell (1985) define work-family conflict as a form of inter-role conflict in which the demands of work and family roles are incompatible.

Quoting from an article in your text (3 Examples):

1.                  She stated, "the ‘placebo effect…disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner" (Miele, 1993, p. 276), but she did not clarify which behaviors were studied.

2.                  Miele (1993) found that "the ‘placebo effect,’ which had been verified in previous studies, disappeared when [only the first group’s] behaviors were studied in this manner" (p. 276).

3.                   Miele (1993) found the following:

The "placebo effect,"…which had been verified in previous studies, disappeared when…to a placebo effect. (p. 276).

Here is an example of how to cite an article in your reference section:

Meyer, J. P., Paunonen, S. V., Gellatly, I. R., Goffin, R. D., & Jackson, D. N. (1989). Organizational commitment and job performance: It’s the nature of the commitment that counts. Journal of Applied Psychology, 74, 152-156.

- Indent the second line 5 spaces.

- The reference page should be titled, "References" and centered.

- It should be included as the last page of your written text, in front of any appendices or attachments.

- Make note of all punctuation, this is standard format, including the italicized source and volume number.

- Authors should be listed in the order they are presented in the article.
