Into Writing: A Basic Writing Text, by Margaret Bonner
At the end of this course, the student should be able to:
- use
basic rules of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling
- use
logical connectors of addition, chronology, cause/effect, and contrast
to join
ideas in a paragraph
- understand
and use rules for formatting a paragraph
- understand
parts of speech
- identify
complete sentences and sentence fragments
- write
a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding
sentence
- revise
a paragraph using correction symbols provided by instructor
- write
a narrative paragraph using the past tense
- write
a descriptive paragraph
- write
an in-class timed paragraph on a given topic
- develop
fluency through free-writing
- use a
computer to complete assignments and/or correspond via email
- use
Level E grammatical structures correctly in written assignments
Course Requirements
- The
student will be required to use a computer to type assignments.
- The
student will come to class on time. More than 3 absences will result in a
lowered grade.
- Students
who miss class are responsible for finding out the day’s homework
assignment from a classmate.
Grading
The final grade will be based on attendance, participation,
and performance. It is possible for a student to get an A, B, or C, but not
pass the course. However, a student must have at least a 70% average to pass.
Paragraphs will be graded as follows:
Content (topic
sentence, well-developed support, well-written conclusion) = 30
Organization
(title, indenting, margins, double spacing) = 30
Grammar (capitalization, punctuation, spelling,
sentence fragments, and Level E
grammatical structures) = 40
