Resistance to adding grading criteria to a syllabus
lMy students complete qualitative work, I can’t come up with a specific criteria
lWhat do they want, me to spoonfeed the students? I shouldn’t have to tell my students how they’re being graded.
lI know an “A” paper when I see one
lThat will just foster “teaching to the test”
Now, I’ll admit. When I attended my syllabus workshop 8 years ago, I nodded dutifully through the section on adding grading criteria, and immediately dismissed them.

And I had a host of excuses for not adding them, including
My students complete qualitative work, I can’t come up with a specific criteria
I shouldn’t have to tell my students how they’re being graded
I know an “A” paper when I see one
That will just foster “teaching to the test”
