Course Description

In this class, we will focus on improving your score on the TOEFL. In this class, you will work to master the skills by doing exercises in the textbook, on the CD-ROM, in the Learning Center, and in class. You should spend 6 to 8 hours outside of class on the assignments and communication tasks each week. The best way to do this is by doing some work on the TOEFL everyday.

Each week you should do all of the following, in order:

1. Check the calendar in WebCT for assignments.
2. Do skill work in your textbook (see the calendar in WebCT for skills and pages).
3. Do the associated CD-ROM skills practice.
4. Use other resources in the Learning Center to improve your TOEFL scores.
5. Analyze any and all practice tests (see Analysis in Portfolio description).
6. Bring your textbook, completed homework, printouts and/or scores with you to class each day.

Course Objectives

To prepare you to take the TOEFL (either PBT or CBT) by discussing, practicing, and analyzing each section of the test;
To improve your TOEFL test-taking skills and strategies for each section of the test;
To learn the scoring procedures for the exam so that you can interpret your own test scores;

Grades

Grades will be based on participation/performance in the following areas:

Assignments/Participation
PARTICIPATION: This means coming to class on time, asking questions if you don't understand something, listening, participating in discussions both in class and online, and giving feedback to peers.
HOMEWORK: You will have various homework assignments which are due at the beginning of the next class or by the assigned time.
LATE OR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS: I do not accept late homework. If you miss a quiz or an assignment, you cannot make it up. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to ask a classmate about the work you missed; you will still be responsible for the information you missed if it appears on an exam or a later assignment.
Attendance
If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be marked absent. However, please come to class even if you are late.
There are no excused absences.
Missing 2 classes will result in your final grade being lowered 10 percentage points.
Missing 4 classes may result in your failing the course.
If you miss class, you are responsible for all the information covered in class.
If you pass the TOEFL (PSU Institutional or International), you will not be required to come to class any more. Before you will be excused, you will first need to show me an official score sheet with your name and information.
