A good English-English dictionary
File folders or binders to organize handouts and other class materials
A folder for your independent reading journal
A folder or binder for new vocabulary
Index cards (3" by 5") for vocabulary
All phones/pagers/etc. should be turned off or set to vibrate during class time.

Class Objectives

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

Use the dictionary to find a word, the part of speech, and syllable stress.
Find and restate the main idea of a paragraph or passage.
Answer comprehension questions about details in a passage.
Use examples from passages to explain and support points.
Write original sentences using vocabulary studied in class.
Summarize main points from a passage in a simple paragraph.
Identify common prefixes, suffixes, and roots, and understand their meanings.
Identify basic noun, verb, adjective, and adverb forms that have been introduced and practiced.
Guess the meanings of words when their meanings are given in a paragraph.
Read at a rate of 80-120 words per minute.
Be able to discuss readings in a group.

Grades

Grades will be based on participation/performance in the following areas:

Vocabulary journal (using Unusual Stories) [10%]
You will also have weekly writing assignments in your journal.
Graded Assignments [10%]
HOMEWORK: You will have reading assignments due for almost every class. Sometimes you will have written assignments about what you read.
LATE OR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS: I do not accept late homework. If you miss a quiz or a test, you cannot make it up. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to ask a classmate or me about the work you missed; you will still be responsible for the information you missed if it appears on an exam or a later assignment.

Final exam [30%]
Attendance
If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be marked absent. However, please come to class even if you are late.
There are no excused absences.
Missing 3 classes will result in your final grade being lowered 10 percentage points.
Missing 6 classes may result in your failing the course.
If you miss class, you are responsible for all the information covered in class. Please get the telephone number or e-mail address of a classmate who is dependable. You should call him/her to get the information you missed.

This class is graded A - F.
