All phones/pagers/etc. should be turned off or set to vibrate during class time.

Course Description

In this course, we will review various skills and content covered in Level E: interviewing skills (yes/no questions, wh- questions, tag questions), conversation skills (describe and introduce self and others, ask and respond to follow-up questions), understanding spatial directions and being able to give and ask for directions, understanding spoken numbers and letters, and building active vocabulary (especially academic).

In addition, we will introduce new ideas or skills: orientation to the state of Oregon; practice common reduced forms; question forms used in interviewing others; forms used in expressing opinions; making complaints, persuading others, requesting clarifications, reporting past events; beginning note-taking; planning and delivering short presentations based on surveys or areas within Oregon.

Class Objectives

By the end of the term, students should be able to do the following:

Understand common reduced forms in spoken English;
Carry on a short conversation about a specific area of Oregon;
Develop questions and be understood asking those questions to gain information for surveys about life on campus or in the area;
Understand and give directions to locations on campus and throughout the metropolitan area;
Plan and deliver a short speech (5 minutes) about some area in Oregon;
Pland and deliver a short presentation using information gained from oral interviews and some kind of visual aid(s);
Take notes on a short taped lecture and answer questions based on those notes on a quiz or test;
Identify the main idea and important details from a short taped lecture;
Perform each of these objectives with at least 75% accuracy in classroom and homework activities and on quizzes and tests.

Grades

Grades will be based on participation/performance in the following areas:

Active Vocabulary Journal
Performance on Presentations
Assignments
HOMEWORK: You will have various homework assignments which are due at the beginning of the next class.
LATE OR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS: I do not accept late homework. If you miss a quiz or a test, you cannot make it up. If you miss a discussion, it is your responsibility to ask a classmate about the work you missed; you will still be responsible for the information you missed if it appears on an exam or a later assignment.

Attendance
If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be marked absent. However, please come to class even if you are late.
There are no excused absences.
Missing 2 classes will result in your final grade being lowered 10 percentage points.
Missing 4 classes may result in your failing the course.
If you miss class, you are responsible for all the information covered in class. Please get the telephone number or e-mail address of a classmate who is dependable. You will have to rely on him/her to give you information if you are absent.

This class is graded A - F.
