Biographical Details:

It is believed that Joseph Runyon was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, about 1781 and was a son of Isaac and  Charity (Geertje) Heggeman Runyon, although this has not been definitively established.  He married Nancy Jacobs in Montgomery County on July 24, 1809.  Joseph and Nancy Jacobs Runyon apparently settled in Wythe County, Virginia, shortly after their marriage since the household of Joseph Runyan appeared in the 1810 US Census for Wythe County and consisted of a young adult couple and one small female child.  Nevertheless, on October 28, 1809, Joseph Runyon purchased one hundred and fifty acres from William Taylor near Abb's Valley in Tazewell County, Virginia, which adjoined property of Alexander Walker.1  Moreover, he was listed on the 1814 Tax List for Tazewell County as owning land on Mud Fork of the Bluestone River, thirteen miles northeast of Tazewell Courthouse.  Therefore, sometime between 1810 and 1814 it is evident that Joseph Runyon and his family moved from Wythe to Tazewell County.  Subsequently, the family was included in the population schedule of the 1820 US Census for Tazewell County and at that time consisted of an adult couple and five daughters, viz., one between ten and sixteen years of age and four under ten years.  Clearly, this agrees well with the known children of Joseph and Nancy Jacobs Runyon.  Furthermore, in 1825 Joseph Runnion (Runyon) bought two hundred and thirteen acres on Mud Fork from the Commonwealth of Virginia and an additional one hundred and sixty acres in 1839.2  Apparently, Joseph and Nancy Runyon remained in Tazewell County for the remainder of their lives.  Indeed, the household of Joseph Runnion (Runyon) was listed in the 1840 US Census for Tazewell County and, in addition to four daughters, also included two sons; one between five and ten and one between ten and fifteen years of age.  Within this context, it is known that two older daughters, Elizabeth and Charity, had married in the 1830's and that two more, Nancy and Martha, married in 1840.  Therefore, the four daughters resident in the household in 1840 can probably be identified as Eliza R., Polly, Milla Ann, and either Nancy or Martha.  Moreover, it seems plausible to identify the older son as Isaac Q. and the younger son as John.  It is thought that Nancy Jacobs Runyon died in Tazewell County in 1848.  Joseph Runyon and his youngest son John appear to have died at nearly the same time, probably in the late fall or winter of 1852 in Tazewell County, since probate proceedings for both them were combined.  (Such a coincidence suggests that an infectious disease such as cholera or typhoid was the likely cause of their deaths; however, this is merely speculation.)  Moreover, on December 29, 1852, Harden Knuckels, son-in-law of Joseph Runyon, was appointed as adminstrator of both the estates of Joseph Runion, deceased, and John Runion.  Subsequently, his title as administrator was revoked since, according to the Court Order Book for the July term of 1853, Hardin Knuckles refused to give the required security.  In his place, William R. Bane was appointed admistrator of the Runion (Runyon) estates.  Moreover, on March 1, 1853, Thomas Marrs and his wife, Milly, sold their share of real and personal of Joseph Runyon, deceased, to John D. Haven, the personal property consisting of one sorrel mare, one rifle gun, five head of hogs, one pair of geese, one shovel plow, one pair of steels, and fifteen bushels of corn.  In addition, on the same day they executed a note to Mr. Haven with property on Mud Fork (evidently part of the estate of Joseph Runyon) as security.  Presumably, they could not sell the land outright because of current probate proceedings.  This loan went into default and on March 30, 1859, as ordered by the court, the land was sold to the highest bidder, Mr. Israel Slade, for the sum of $35.00.  Likewise, on September 3, 1853, heirs of Joseph Runion, deceased, viz., Hardin Nuckels and Elizabeth, his wife; Abraham Smyth and Polly, his wife; William Tabor and Charity, his wife; and James H. Tabor and Nancy, his wife; sold their share of Joseph Runyon's property to William Slade.  Furthermore, it is known that three of the daughters of Joseph and Nancy Runyon, viz., Betsy, Charity, and Milly, apparently left Virginia with their husbands and families within a year or two following their father's death, i.e., in 1853 or 1854 (as indicated by their children's birthplaces in later census records), and migrated to northwestern Missouri (in particular, Grundy County).3  Perhaps, this was motivated by unpleasantness surrounding probate proceedings.  Subsequently, in the spring of 1885, some members of these families left Missouri and settled near the town of Arnold in Custer County, Nebraska,.4,5

"Joseph and Nancy (Jacobs) Runyon lived in Wythe County until 1810, and then they moved to Tazewell County, where Joseph had purchased 150 acres of land from William Taylor and his wife October 28, 1809.  The deed records of Tazewell County indicate that his land was situated in Abb's Valley.  By 1825 Joseph had acquired 213 acres of land on Mud Fork of Bluestone Creek, which was fourteen miles northeast of the Tazewell County courthouse.
Joseph and his wife sold a parcel of land to Pleasant Franklin April 17, 1847.  This was the same land that Joseph purchased from William Taylor and his wife.  Nancy probably died before 1850, since she is not shown on the census for that year.  Joseph and Nancy had issue, and from the U. S. Census records, it appears that they had two sons and five daughters.  Joseph was born in 1881 (sic - 1781) in Montgomery County and died in Tazewell County early in 1853."

3a. It is evident that in 1859 Thomas and Charity Runyon Marrs had been living in Missouri for several years.  Therefore, it was likely that their intention from the beginning was to default on the note executed with Mr. Haven in 1853.  Indeed, it is probable that this understanding was mutual and, as such, was equivalent to a sale. (unpublished notes)

b. Thomas Marrs was granted a patent on forty acres, viz., "North half of the lot numbered one of the of the South West quarter of Section thirty in Township sixty-two of Range twenty-three, in the District of lands subject to sale at Milan, Missouri".  This parcel was alternatively described as the NE 1/4 of SW 1/4 Sec 30 Franklin Twp, Range 23.  The patent was entered in 1854, but the land was sold in 1855 before the patent issued, as was commonly the case at this time.  (US Land Patent Certificate No. 3880; Washington, DC, issued 1 Aug 1857.)

c. A daughter is believed to have been born to Thomas and Milly Marrs in Harrison County, Missouri, in 1856.  In addition, land records exist which indicate that the Thomas Marrs family lived near the Iowa-Missouri border, in the vicinity of Lineville, in Mercer County, Missouri, in 1856-57.  However, they moved back to Grundy County by 1860.  It is also possible that they lived in Iowa in the mid 1860's as indicated by the birthplace of Anna M. given in the 1900 US Census for Grundy County (Franklin Twp.).  Subsequently, the family lived in Marion Twp., Mercer County, from about 1870 to 1881, but returned to Grundy County in 1881.  David Marrs and his son William P. conveyed thirty acres of land in Grundy County (in Sec. 20; Twp. 63; Rng. 23) to Thomas Marrs in 1881.
The Civil War service record of Thomas Marrs indicates that he was a Private in Company E, 30th Regiment, Missouri Militia, enrolled from July 28 to October 31, 1862.  In addition, he also served for about thirty days in Capt. Alley's Company of Militia in Mercer County, Missouri, in the fall of 1863.  (Jean Leeper, "William Erskine Marrs Family In America", www.iowatelecom.net/~grannyroots/Our%20Marrs.html, 1998.)

4. "In the spring of 1885 a wagontrain consisting of forty people left the Forks of the river, northwest of Trenton, Missouri, bound for the Prairies of Nebraska.  The families were all related either by blood or marriages and carried or were descended from the following surnames: Marrs, Tabor, Maxson, Bushong, Collins, and Runyon.  Among this party was my Grandmother, 9 year old Lucy Ann Marrs.  When I was a child I well remember her stories of the trip and years following as they homesteaded and forged a new way of life."
"Most of the original members of this wagontrain, as well as many of their descendants, are buried in the Arnold Cemetery of Custer County, Nebraska, where they arrived on April 12, 1885, six weeks after beginning their journey." (Sandra Sanchez, www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/7259/wagontrain.html, 2000-2003.)

5.  Jean Leeper has prepared a detailed descendancy of the Runyon family of New Jersey, Virginia, Missouri, Nebraska, etc.  Joseph Runyon, husband of Nancy Jacobs is included in this descendancy; extracted as follows (additional data cited from census records and other sources is included and indicated by italics):

First Generation

Joseph Runyon, born 1781 in Montgomery County, VA, died 1852 in Tazewell County, VA; married 24 Jul 1809 in Montgomery County, VA, Nancy Jacobs, daughter of Roley Jacobs and Millie Ann (Miliann) Carter, born 1782 in Montgomery County, VA, died 1848-1850 in Tazewell County, VA.

1. Eliza R. Runyon, born 1810 in VA.
2. Elizabeth Kindred Runyon, born 12 Feb 1812, died 6 Jul 1889; married Harden Knuckels.
3. Charity Runyon, born 1 Sep 1816 in VA, died 1 Feb 1890, Grundy Co., MO; married William Bartley Tabor.
4. Polly Runyon, born 1819 in Tazewell County, VA; married 2 Sep 1852, Abraham Smith (Smythe).
5. Nancy Runyon, born 12 Apr 1822*, died 29 Aug 1888; married James Harrison Tabor.
6. Milla Ann (Milly Ann) Runyon, born 24 Apr 1822* in VA, died May 21, 1882; married Thomas Marrs.
7. Martha Runyon, born 1825 in Tazewell Co., VA, died before 1859; married 3 Dec 1840, Tazewell Co., VA, Lewis Belcher.
8. Isaac Q. Runyon; married February 17, 1848, in Tazewell Co., VA, Rachel Blankenship.
9. John Runyon, born 1831 in Tazewell Co., VA, died 1852 in Tazewell Co., VA.
*The birthdate of Nancy Runyon has been given by some researchers as April 12, 1822.  Obviously, if a birthdate of April 24, 1822, is accepted for Milly Runyon, then the birth of her sister, Nancy, at any time in the year 1822 is impossible, unless they were in fact twins and, thus, born together.  However, this is not attested by any reputable source.  Moreover, although later census records are not entirely consistent, they do indicate that Nancy Runyon was probably born about 1820.  Alternatively, family sources have placed the birth of Milly Runyon in 1823 instead of 1822.  In this case, the 1822 birthdate of Nancy could be accepted and the birthdate of Milly modified to April 24, 1823.  Clearly, further research is required to clarify these issues.

a. Some researchers have stated that Eliza R. and Elizabeth K. Runyon were one and the same person.  However, this does not agree with Tazewell County census records of 1840 and 1850.  In particular, in 1850, Eliza Runyon, age forty, was resident in the household of Samuel Snider, perhaps, as a domestic.  It seems that she never married.  (1850 US Census Population Schedule for Tazewell County, Virginia, National Archives, Washington DC:  pgs. 260B-261A, (microfilm: roll M432_979; imgs. 95-6).)

"J. H. Nuckles - Every town not only in Missouri but elsewhere depends for its success upon the energy, capability and enterprise of certain men.  One of the leading industries not only of Urich but of other towns in Missouri too numerous to mention is the Hurley Lumber Company, and wherever the Hurley Lumber Company is found is a recognized factor in the commercial and industrial development of that locality.  Their business at Urich is no exception, unless of the possibility of it being above the standard. J. H. Nuckles, who represents the Hurley Lumber Company here, is a native of Missouri.  He was born in Bates County in 1866 and is a son of J. B. Nuckles, an early settler of western Missouri, who is a native of that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia.  J. B. was engaged in farming and stock raising in Bates County until 1887.  He then went to Appleton City, Missouri, where for four years he was engaged in the lumber business.  He then removed to Brownington and for four years was engaged in a similar enterprise.  He then went to Urich, took charge of the Hurley Lumber Company's local affairs, representing them until 1890.  A few years after that he retired.  He died in 1907.  He was a man well known in this locality, prominent in lodge circles, being a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.  His wife survived him until June 29, 1915, when she too passed to the great beyond.  They were the parents of the following children: Mrs. Minnie Curran; Mrs. Libbie Garrison, deceased; John H., the subject of this sketch; Mrs. Minta Blanchard, Dallas, Texas; J. R., Osceola, Missouri; Fannie Fraley, Vogue, Kansas; T. O., Creighton, Missouri; Mrs. Nessie Littlejohn, Meyronne, Canada; and two who died in infancy."

Marrs, aged 70, applied for a pension and stated that: he was born in Cabell County, VA, in 1842; he lived in Grundy County, MO, for four years; Taney County, MO, for six years; in Kansas for four years; Dallas County, TX, for seven years; and in West Virginia for twenty years.  The obvious conclusion is that Augustus P. Marrs deserted his family.

## Some researchers identify the the wife of J. Carr Tabor as Margaret Ann Tabor.  Within this context, it seems plausible that Anna Coleman's given name could have been Margaret.  Hence, her married name could have been Margaret Anna (Coleman) Tabor.
§ It is also reported that Stephen Bartley Tabor died in Grundy County, Missouri, presumably well before 1918.

§* "Death of Mrs. Fannie Tabor Yesterday Morning.   Mrs. Fannie Tabor, whose recent illness has been mentioned in these columns died at 6 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maggie Compton, on Stuart Street. She had been ill for some weeks, and several days ago it became apparent that she could not recover.  A hemorrhage of the lungs was the immediate cause of her death.  She was aged not quite fifty years, having been born on the 4th day of February, 1857.  She was the daughter of John W. Johnson, of Falls Mills, who survived her, and the widow of George C. Tabor, who preceded her to the grave by some nineteen years.  Four of her eight children were gathered around her bedside when the end came. [Also siblings...] Mrs. W.E. Shufflebarger, Mrs. Compton, Miss Ella Johnson and ...Tabor.  She was a consistent member of the Christian Church.  The remains will be taken to Falls Mills, where interment will be made today."   (obituary: Bluefield Daily Telegraph; Bluefield, WV, January 23, 1907.)
