efficient process possible,
here are some
general hints:

BA
advice:
The foreign lang requirement = you need to take 2 foreign
languages to earn a BA in Applied Ling.
1 is a 2 year requirement for any BA
(equivalent of 203 or 2 years proficiency).
The 2nd is 2 terms of ANOTHER
language for the App Ling BA.
At least 1 of these 2 languages needs to be
a non-Indo-European language!
AND you do need to be enrolled in either
language during your time in the program (after Ling 390).
Also, most languages start their sequence
in fall, and the first year of some
languages is not offered every year, so plan ahead!
Note: There are some non Indo-European
languages that are offered through
the heritage language (e.g., Vietnamese).
Here is a list of non Indo-European
languages offered at PSU:
Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese,
Korean, Turkish, Swahili, American Sign Language(ASL)
Ling 492 Structure of English is strongly recommended before
taking Ling 411 Syntax.
(That means that you should follow this
advice unless you’re a grammar expert!)
You should take Ling 411 Syntax after
you’ve had 12 credits+ in Linguistics.
You should take Ling 407 Senior Seminar at
the end of your program (and after at least 5 ling courses)!

planning form as Word doc
Attention: There are new requirements beginning Fall 2010!
Because you
need a BA for the certificate to be conferred, you can do this as a post-bac student
OR
concurrently as an undergrad.
If you finish you’re BA first, it is much easier to wait until
you are done
with your TESL Cert requirements to graduate.
That is, if you are in a BA program
while you do the
certificate, don’t graduate until you have finished the requirements for BOTH
programs.
You must take Ling 390 (Intro), Ling 471
(Understanding the Interntnl Exp) and Line 438 (2nd
Lang Acq)
BEFORE you can take Ling 477 Methods I! [NO
EXCEPTIONS]
You must take Ling 477 Methods I before
Ling 478 Methods II and
BEFORE Ling 439 Language
Assessment and Ling 475 Curriculum Development.
You should complete your portfolio by the
term after you finish Methods II.
The Language Education elective requirement
may be fulfilled by the following courses:
LING 475 Curriculum Design & Materials Development
LING 439 Language Assessment
LING 470 Grammar for TESOL
LING 409 Community ESL Practicum (must
take for 4 credits!)
LING 476 Corpus Linguistics in Language
Teaching
LING 474 ESL in the Workplace
Various LING 410 adviser-approved topic
courses
(For 2011-2012 Year: Computer
Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Heritage Lang Acquisition, Analyzing
Classroom Language & Interaction, Phonetics for Teaching)
Please note that these courses may have
prerequisites in addition to LING 390
(like Methods I or
LING 492 Structure of English)!

The same advice applies from above for both
programs. You can count many of your
TESL
Cert courses as your electives for the BA
and vice-versa. Doing both programs does
require
that you take more classes needed for either
program by itself.
