Panel Presentation
by Christina Hartman
During my Panel Presentation, our group talked about eugenics. Personally, I talked about genocides and how they begin, which is what I wrote my research paper on too. One of my favorite things to talk about was "The Wave," originally known as "Take as Directed," a short story by high school teacher Ron Jones. I really loved this short story because it is true, this teacher totally brainwashed his students to teach them a lesson about how Hitler recruited the Nazis. It was a lesson no one in the school would forget. This wasn't a formal scientific study, like Milgram's experiment which also dealt with war crimes, but I love it even more because it was just this idea that this teacher had, and he ended up turning these middle class, suburban, 1970's ordinary students into true "followers". I wish I could write a whole paper just about "Take as Directed," and maybe someday I will.

I also discussed Nazi propaganda and it's effect on people. I showed a few pictures, too, like this one, where Hitler is posing in front of a bright sun, a proud eagle in flight, a sea of loyal followers, weilding a giant crimson Nazi war flag. How glorious!

This falls under "ethics and social responsibility" because much of what goes into creating a genocide is unethical, and goes against social responsibility, which I had to read a lot about in order to give my presentation.
