Lab 2: Symbology and Classification
Introduction
This lab introduces symbolization of features and
rasters in ArcGIS. It also introduces classification of features
and rasters. You will learn the following skills in ArcView:

Changing symbology

Symbolizing features by categorical attributes

Using styles and creating layer files
-
Symbolizing rasters
-
Classifying features by standard methods
-
Classifying features manually
-
Mapping density
-
Using graduated and chart symbols
Instructions
Do the tutorial exercises in Chapters 5 and 6 of
Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop.
Deliverables
Answer the following questions and produce the following
outputs. Hand them in to the instructor at the beginning of the next
lab section. Labs should be typed, include your name and lab number,
be well organized, and staples together.
Chapter 5

What does the unique value option do in categorical
symbolization?

At the end of section 5b make sure you are in the
Layout View. Click Insert, Text and then type the enter key. Double
click on the small text box. Type your name and then choose the change
symbol button. Change the font soze to 36.
Click OK twice. Click File, Page Setup and change the page size to
letter and the page orientation to landscape and then click OK. Choose
File, Print and hand in the map.

If you make a layer (lyr) file from a shape file
after symbolizing it, why must you include the original shapefile in you
want to give it to a friend?

Chapter 6

Explain what a histogram displays by using an example
of population in African countries using the natural breaks method.
Be sure to describe what the X and Y axes mean.

values with 3 quantile classes?
