Battle of Nectansmere
In 638 AD King Brudei led his army against the Angles. For years the Northumbrian Angles pressured the Picts as they inched their way northward. According to the Venerable Bede, in the Battle of Nectansmere, the Picts pretended to flee the area and trapped the Northumbrians between the hill fort of Dun Nechtan and an area of swamp known as Nectans Mire (mere). Little is known of the battle, except that King Brudei was victorious against the Angle king, King Ecgfrith, and most of the Northumbrian army was killed along with him. The Battle of Nectansmere was decisive in keeping the English Influence south of the River Forth, both politically and geographically.
