The Battle of Mons Graupius

As early as 55 BC the Romans had conquered southern Britain, and they entered lower Scotland with the same purpose. In AD 80, Agricola’s Roman troops sailed to the West Coast and entered Caledonia where they met 30,000 Celtic warriors, the ‘Caledonian Confederacy,’ led by Calgacus (‘the Swordsman’). The battle was a terrible defeat for the Caledonians. Mons Graupius is usually cited as the historic battlefield.
