Battle of Dunbar
Once Edward I (Longshanks)
had forced the Scots into submission at Berkwick, he moved toward the Scottish
defense gathered at Dunbar. The Battle of Dunbar was a merciless defeat for
Scotland. With Scotland in his control, Longshanks moved
on Scottish relics, to demoralize the people further. The Stone of Destiny was
removed from Scone,
for example, and placed in Westminster Abbey. Edinburgh castle was garrisoned by English
troops, and the English dealt harshly with rebellious
Scots who rose against them.
