How Did I Become Interested in Transportation?
 
My grandfather, Lawrence A. Daly (1907-1984), came from a railroad family. His grandfather John W. Daly (1832-1897) worked for the railroad in Illinois and Iowa, and his father, William J. Daly (1862-1911) also worked for the railroad in Iowa. My grandfather worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 45 years (1927-1972), ending his career as an agent-telegrapher in Rodeo, California. My other grandfather, Nello Bertini (1894-1947) was a chef, and for a short time worked for United Airlines in their food service facility at the San Francisco International Airport. It is also possible that my great grandfather Emilio Bertini worked on railroad construction in Portola, California around 1900.

Growing up in a suburb of San Francisco, at the top of a hill, most of our travel was by automobile. Bus transportation was limited and bicycling was difficult on the hills. But, a memorable family trip to visit my grandmother in Italy (including some travel through Switzerland) in the summer 1979 involved a true multimodal experience as shown below:
