Databases and Indexes

Generally locating research articles or publications on a topic is a two-step process:

Use a database or an index to search the literature in a discipline.
Look for the publications in Vikat <http://vikat.pdx.edu>, PSU Library's online catalog. (Increasingly, journals are becoming available online. In some cases they are free to all, in some cases, available only via a license. See the Full Text table below for a listing of online full text resources in education at PSU.)

ERIC
Primary database for identifying research and publications in education and its related fields. The database provides citations, indexing and abstracting for articles drawn from more than 800 journals (records are identified with accession numbers that begin with EJ) and for thousands of educational documents (records are identified with accession numbers that begin with ED).

How to find material identified in ERIC
ERIC Documents full text from the ERIC system <http://www.eric.ed.gov> Full text of many ERIC documents from 1993-present From the search screen, change the search field to ERIC # and type in the number of the document you wish to retrieve:
	ERIC Digests <http://www.ericfacility.net/databases/ERIC_Digests/index/> Full text of thousands of ERIC Digests (executive summary/overviews of topics and developing research in education). These are excellent starting places for research.

Education Full Text
<http://wilsonweb2.hwwilson.com/autologin/> Covers approximately 425 journals, magazines and yearbooks in the field of education. indexing 1983- to the present; absracting 1984 – to the present. Full Text coverage (of about a third of the included journals) varies with dates starting in the mid 1990's.

Professional Development Collection

"Abstract and index coverage for nearly ~400 well known professional development titles; searchable full text for nearly 280 journals covering the most current topics in the field of education"

Dissertation Abstracts International

"The database includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. . . . The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 North American graduate schools and European universities." The databases includes pdf files of the first 24 pages of dissertations from 1997 - to the present. ALL PSU dissertations from 1997 to the present are available in full text.

To limit to PSU thesis and dissertations, use the PSU school code 0180. To limit to PSU education dissertations, limit to degree Ed D:

Health and Psychosocial Instruments

Mental Measurements Yearbook

Full text of 9th - present edition. Provides information and substantive reviews of commercially published tests. Searchable by score, subject, author or title.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, and linguistics.

Social Sciences Citation Index
Provides article citations drawn from approximately 1600 social science journals. Provides cited-reference tracking. Working from a citation, SSCI allows you to identify which other journal articles have cited the article.

Educational Administration Abstracts
Some overlap with ERIC. Especially strong in personnel, curriculum, school-community relations, supervision, minority group relations and professional education topics

Some overlap with ERIC. Coverage includes research and theory about "participants in higher education (e.g., students, faculty, administrators), their functions (e.g., teaching, reasearch, service, planning, management), and their environment (e.g., institutional missions, state and federal relations, demograhic trends)."

Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography
Some overlap with ERIC. Coverage includes article abstracts and book reviews related to the growth and development of children. Sections include: Biology, Health & Medicine; Cognition, Learning & Perception; Education; Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology; Social Psychology and Personalilty; Theory, Methodology and Reviews.

Annual Reviews in the Social Sciences

Provide extensive literature reviews of current trends in the covered discipline. Extremely useful. Library also subscribes to Biomedical and Physical Sciences series.

	Education Abstracts Full Text <http://wilsonweb2.hwwilson.com/autologin/> Big overlap w/ Professional Development Colletion in terms of titles covered, but covers more of the mainline research journals. Consistent use of subject headings allows deep historical research (the print predecessor of this product dates back to 1934).
	AERA Communication of Research free online research journals list "Only links to electronic journals that are scholarly, peer-reviewed, full text and accessible without cost. We have excluded professional magazines that are largely not refereed, and commercial journals that may only allow access to a very limited number of articles as an enticement to buy."
	EBSCOhost <http://search.epnet.com/login.asp?profile=web> Several full text (or partially full text databases) including a general academic database, a newspaper database, and a general/popular magazines database.
	JSTOR Full text repository of core scholarly journals in all fields of the humanities, social sciences and the general sciences. Includes coverage of ~250 journals. Coverage dates back to the journal's first issues and continues forward till most recent years (three-five).

Education Journal Annotations

Titles selected include research journals that are included in major educational indexes, valuable Internet resources, and children's magazines that support the K-12 curriculum. "
