HST 354U: Early Medieval
Europe, 300-1000
Winter 2024
Portland State University
FINAL EXAM GUIDELINES
Taken In Class Thursday, March 21,
12:15-2:05
250 points (25% of final grade)
Exam format
- The exam will
be comprehensive; that is, it will cover all the material
presented this term.
- The exam will
consist of four, multi-faceted questions, from which students will
choose 2 to answer. Please indicate clearly which question
prompts you are replying to in your exam booklets.
- Each answer will
be expected to make use of a
minimum of 4 primary sources from the term; primary sources are
those readings deriving from the historical period itself (thus,
Ammianus Marcellinus,
Dhuoda, Liutprand, etc.). The textbook and other secondary readings
(Wickham,
Winroth) may be referenced and employed, but they may not count
toward the primary source minimum.
- You may use your
notebooks from the term during the exam.
- Your answers
must also incorporate material from the class lectures (the more, the
merrier!).
- Please bring to class one or two
blank bluebooks (or greenbooks). These may be purchased at the
store in Smith Center. I will also have extra copies. These exam books
will be collected before the beginning of the exam and students will
receive in return a like number of books.
- Make sure you
have writing utensils for the exam. Pen or pencil is fine.
- All completed
questions will receive at least partial credit. Each question will be
weighted 125 points/250.
- Hard deductions:
- Less than four
primary sources (-5 points per missing source)
- Failure to use
lecture material in response (-10 points)
